PRONUNCIATION
LISTENING AND SPEAKING SKILLS COURSES
Teachers:  Ms. Lizzie Yang &
Ms. Sarah Chan / Mr Mark Aldrich

Pronunciation is the foundation for speaking and writing.
In speaking, each word needs to be spoken out correctly, and each word is composed of different sounds (phonemes).  For instance, the word ‘most’ has 4 different phonemes – ‘m’, ‘o’, ‘s’, ‘t’ and they are merged together to form  the sound of ‘most’ as one utterance.

In writing the process is reversed.  From the vowel ‘o’, we may trace back the other 3 individual sounds: ‘m’, ‘s’ and ‘t’ through  pronouncing them together so as to be able  to spell out the word ‘most’.

Since a vowel can sound differently in different words, such as ‘apple’, ‘May’, ‘father’, etc, a phonetic symbol can tell us what sound the vowel should be pronounced as.  With a full knowledge of the phonetic system, learners will be able to say any words correctly with confidence.

English speaking makes use of 6 different kinds of mouth shapes, the quick movements of the tongue, the passing of air through the nose, and the vibrating of the vocal cords.  Cantonese, however, make use of only the front part of the mouth.  In fact, 40% of the English sounds do not appear in Cantonese.  So in this pronunciation course, students will learn:

  1. how to identify the phonetic variations in the English language;
  2. how to distinguish the phonological difference in English and Cantonese;
  3. how to speak out the voiced and voiceless consonants properly;
  4. how to merge two or more single sounds into one;
  5. intonations, linking of words and so on.

After finishing these comprehensive courses, learners will not only be able to pronounce any words in a dictionary correctly and speak like a native but also their listening skills will correspondingly be improved at the same time.
